Welcome my friend, check online too they do skype campaigns if you cant find anyone locally
Good on ya. More courage than I have.
Well done beardling, but now comes the hard part. Getting your friends to agree on the same time to play
This makes me happy!
check the wizards website for stores with a game night.
You have taken your first step into a larger world. Quest well and may the dice be ever in your favor.
Also Roll20 is a good option, but it looks like he has a local friendly game shop to search for a group
Where could I find a campaign on skype?
It’s more of a coop game so while intimidating, most folks are there to help you
Welcome to the game! I hope you find a place with that group, they sound awesome. Also; when you buy new dice, look into getting some pre-
I'm 43 and just started, too. :)
-owned dice. It’s crazy, but there’s built in mojo in those dice! Give em a couple rolls and pick the best rolling ones!
Where do you live?! I got nice for Christmas and would also love to learn!
Dang. Well best of luck man! Keep us posted with how your games go! (Middle of OH)
This. Gonna start a game with the SO, two friends from across the country (via skype) and maybe one more in September. Can't wait.
20? I was 9 when I found I had an interest for D&D, 10 when I started playing, and now, at 13 I am a DM and in 2 campaigns at once. Wow.
One of us. One of us.
Welcome to the club. Now roll initiative.
My friends and are I using this to play as I comment this :)
Fucking awesome, what are you playing?
I've played in the past, but honestly after watching a show called Critical Role for so long it's actually helped me remember rules and such
Welcome to the fold! Roll20 is a fun option if you need a fix, but playing in person is much more fun. Any questions just ask!
I'm still looking for Skype campaigns and haven't found any :(
Like a drug dealer the first set is free and dozens of sets later it’s just one more hit lol
Welcome! The best people I know and meet play D&D
I have this same set. I just don't have anyone who is willing to try it with me and my girlfriend.
One of us! One of us!
Welcome to the fold brother. Get some xp
May those dice treat you well in your upcoming adventures friend.
I wanna and never have... but not any ppl to start with either. Good luck bro! Tell me how it goes
Narrow butt long
If your in AZ, hit me up and I can work you into a game :)
Tell me about it. I'm lucky if I can even get my group to respond to my messages about setting up a time.
One of us! One of us!
Welcome to the wonderful world of Pen and Paper RPGs. I do hope you enjoy them.
Meh skype campains, discord and roll20 is how people roll today
Theres also a discord channel call Tavern Jockies that's completely geared towards DnD
I literally had my first ever session today! Luckily, my GM is a seasoned vet with every answer!
D&d was one of the best things I got to learn to play last year(: I hope you enjoy it!!!
I want to hear about your future games. Please post them. What edition did you get?
So exciting! I'm glad you have interest in this hobby. It's a good one. Virtually limitless too. Wait until you start on miniatures :)
1.) Saves are high. 2.) Checks are low. 3.) Rules are guidelines.
Awesome. Go back a few times. Ya never know who is looking to start a new game.
Welcome to the fold! Try to avoid the dice collecting addiction if you can. Could save you some money lol
Thumbnail looked like a dragon swallowing a black sausage of love for a brief second.
I want to give a quick shout out to EpicTable. Great little program to run it all that is user friendly and very utility full. Costs a bit &
Has its flaws. But has allowed me to run several campaigns across the world.
Hey man I'm 19 and just joined my first group. a shitload of fun and I didn't realize how bad I was at quick simple additions/multiplication
Came here to say this. Roll20 is awesome.
Nice choice of dice colour. Play a regular mortal race and uncomplicated class to begin with. Trust me on this, it'll give you perspective.
It's worse when everyone is begging you to DM and you have to let them down because you feel flat and uninspired.
That’s how you start. I’m backing the Kraken Dice Kickstarter for more and more. It’s an addictive thing, collecting dice.
DMs are cosmically required to suffer, I think. I wrote for a year, and two sessions in, my baby came a month early.
Im DMing for the first time this weekend! I’m using the Starter Set too!
Always check for traps...sorry, that's all i got
I expected this to be a fictional story
Me and some friends hold a weekly arena game. No role-playing straight combat and traps. Good for learning mechanics and newbies
Roll20 is a good online gaming sight, if you are able to find a group fantasy grounds is a good program for d&d as well.
dude, thank you for posting this! it makes me feel way less afraid to ask, now I’ll try the same thing.
Always the DM, never the player :( i like it but I gotta find someone else who wants to DM I swear to god.
I would really love to learn this game as well..
@op Welcome aboard enjoy the adventure!
It's the best game! You can even fight wizard Nicholas Cage in a bear suit screaming for the bees!
That hits home. It's been about two months now. Someone's always out of town, working, exams, etc.
Put it all into charisma, huh?
They already made a dice tower. Oh yeah, definitely one of us.
If you want to play online with friends in other locations try Roll20.net
I'm disappointed in the both of us.
Welcome to the club @OP hope you have a lot of fun!
Be careful, it can be highly addictive
one of us.... one of us....
Happy hunting! Once you are fluent in standard, try some Homebrew.
My gf just ordered this a couple days ago. You saying we'd have fun just us playing?
I'll be 26 soon and you have far bigger balls than me when it comes to this stuff. Always wanted to play, never bothered to try.
As a 25 year old who has also just picked it up I am glad to not be the only one. Now I just need people to play with.
The best memories come from when they're not, though.
I have a former friend that started to play DnD, he's 32 and never had a girl talk to him in his life.
How many do you need?
Have fun and don't be put off if you end up playing with shitters, there's plenty out there in all hobbies, roleplaying included
Aw dude that’s so cool! Good luck finding a game. If you want a good example to watch look for Critical Role on YouTube (campaign 2 is fun)
nice dice. looks similar to the first set I bought.
also, prepare a space in your house for all the new dice you're going to be buying... ;P
Books are pretty expensive, ask your friends... Otherwise, there are a lot of great wikias out there with all the info from the books!
Fear is the path to the Dark Side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate, hate.. to Magic The Gathering
Three or so.
Good work @OP Go forth and make adventures! Drop me a DM if you have any questions, or shit :)
well done, and welcome :D
I've just started with my partner and friends and it's great fun! I just need a comfy chair as our first sesh went for a while!
28 here. Always wanted to play but never had opportunity/time/friends
I turn 30 in 2 weeks and I recently bought this and started a campaign with friends. I don’t have a clue what I’m doing but I am loving it.
I work at a tabletop gaming store. Warhorn.net is where I direct people who are looking for rpg groups. It's amazing, truly.
It's possible to run a campaign for one person, definitely. Just remember, one of you needs to be the dungeon master.
You want a small group, 'cause someone has to run, and you'd want at least two people to actually play. 4-5 players/1DM is about right imo.
Just bought everything you need to begin for a friends 27th birthday. Starting this weekend! (The gift was more for myself as well)
One of us.
Awesome! Enjoy! Also ask questions here if you've got 'em.
Welcome to the wonderful world of tabletop RPG. Explore other systems once you're comfy with DnD. Personal favourites are WoD & Dark Heresy
Hey @OP check dndbeyond. It's a great free resource, has all the basic rules and character generator so you don't have to carry your books!
Get yourself some more dice, and have fun! Welcome to spending the rest of your life craving more D&D.
In person or not at all.
DnD is amazing! Make sure you find a good DM though, it makes all the difference.
great site for dnd and other rpgs as well, me and some friends are currently playing dark heresy and are planning on using it for shadowrun
I've run a campaign for one guy before, still had heaps of fun. My regular group is usually 3 people (including me, the dm)
Wow people still play this? If anyone needs me I'll be in my cave
Some great discord servers out there to find fellow players and connect with them. Good luck!
If you want, you can ask me questions about it. I've gotten a total of 4 people into it, so I'm totally down for answering questions
Reminder for the ~400 comments of people saying "I want to start but don't know anyone" - Roll20.net exists.
One of us. One of us. One of us.
I wear the cloak in the relationship
Also some games on discord as I recall, not sure of addresses though.
where you from? if Mississauga On, pm me.
I bought the same kit and start this Saturday. I'm nervous yet excited as heck to begin this journey
I hope those dice aren't cursed, if not they will be an important party of companions.
Hell yeah! Just started running my own group last week, and they're loving it! Best of luck to you, fellow Dungeon Master!
Even harder when you live in s country where this never became popular, even among the nerds.
Welcome! It's one of the most rewarding and enjoyable game to play!
Im 24 and would totally do the same, but i have no one to play with.
Ok so, you got free dice and then you bought another set? That’s fantastic... you need a good dice bag now.
Yea my group of friends use discord and ziteboard.
Look for groups doing them on discord. There are tons of servers running campaigns
roll20 is the best if you cant get into any local games or if your local games arent running ones that may interest you.
I was gonna start my first campaign, then my friends moved to uni ;-;
Macros are your friend when it comes to Shadowrun when using roll20.
Duuuuude those look exactly like my first set of dice. I've still got them, and still use 'em every Monday night!
Giving an updoot and a comment so I can come back to this for that reddit link.
Ignore skype, check roll20 forums and either use their in-app chat features or use twitch or discord
Session 1 tomorrow, first time DMing, very excited. Using Roll20 & dndbeyond with 3 friends over discord.
The only thing harder than that is naming your character. But yeah, arranging time frame is like herding cats.
Comgratulations, if you will be able to find a good playing group you will experience one of the best fun around.
I've never played D&D but I want to. Might help a little for art inspiration and plus I'm a nerd.
We had a large group of people who had a weekly game. We played with whoever showed up, but it was usually more than half.
I bought this set after my friends said they were interested in playing it, since then it’s sat gathering dust. Quite annoying really
I'd be happy if we could agree on which year we plan to play our next session by now.
I have the red version of those dice. I’ve also played 11 hour D&D sessions in a 2 year campaign :P
I miss my adventures. Former DM here. You're gonna make memories that will shine light on your worst days for the rest of your life
I wanna play!
Does anyone have experience playing on the HTC Vive? If so I assume tabletop simulator is the way to go?
As a GM, The best for me is 4-6 others. It depends on how passive the people are. Roughly speaking you need 1 GM, 1 Leader, and 1 good foil.
It has its issues, but it works well enough and is really the only decent choice available.
I rolled a sorcerer with DM and got really high stats including an 18 with plus two racial. My DM now complains all the time he's op
This has always interested me but I've never got around to learning more about it
This is how you get lost to the Dark Side.
If you enjoy watching/listening to people play, you should check out Critical Role by Geek and Sundry. Voice actors playing. It's brilliant
YAAAAAAS - welcome, frand. For your viewing pleasure see the following: Critical Role, Acquisitions Inc, The Adventure Zone. Enjoy the ride!
Welcome to the guild,if you can't find a group a ton of people play online, look in reddit and roll20, I am sure you will find someone. GLHF
Yeah, over 5 players is a bitch to DM and gets slow in my experience.
As a DM, I approve this message.
Fuck that. I'm not buying dice that someone's used all the 20s from.
What store and where? They need a fucking award. Hells yeah! Have fun on your adventures good sir.
Having been a DM, this is why you do point buy for any long-term campaign. Ability scores are too important to be random.
Try roll20.net or /r/lfg if you want to find a group to play with.
W/ all due respect, while I find roll20 great that's like saying "for all those saying they'd love to go out, you could just drink at home."
one of us one of us!
It's not MY fault none of my d20s wanna roll above a 6.
And the same RPG even sometimes. I’m currently DMing a 5e and Pathfinder, and playing in 3.5 and Pathfinder. All different campaigns
Dungeons and dragons is a lot like masturbation. Sure you can do it yourself, but it's a lot more fun in the back of a shop with strangers
This inspired me to buy this and try to learn and have lots of fun adventures :) thanks and good luck!
I turned 27 a couple weeks ago. Im finally getting into minis (SW Legion first) after being interested in the hobby for over 10 years.
Correlation does not mean causation.
I always upvote critical role content
They should have let you just buy the player's handbook. The starter set is more of a group starter set.
Congrats. I just started playing after being interested for years. I'm now a dice junkie
Player's handbook and a set of dice is all you need to play forever. Models and extras are all optional.
The starter set truly is an excellent starting place. I loved the scenario and it was very easy to learn the game with. Good luck!
Oh, a pen/pencil and paper helps too...
Website Rolld20 is your friend, there are other games besides DND, scheduling is an unfathomable burden. Welcome to tabletop gaming
I'll be making the jump back in myself once I get a uni break.
YES! I started last year by buying the starter set too! My friend said I "really got into D&D this year"
Make a few characters. Show up again. They sound like good folk.
Keeping getting sets eventually you’ll get a good one.
I just finished running the starter set game, and I can say, absolutly fantastic game for newcomers and vetrans alike. Welcome to the hobby!
Wish more game stores were like that. Just by caring and helping, they turned an $8 set of dice into an invested customer who's spending 1/2
$60 today and had such a good experience he's telling the whole internet. You should mention the store name @op. 2/2
Try out Rolegate.com. It's great for people who just want to get into rpgs without needing to organise a time and place with poeple.
Good on ya for having a place to do it! I've been curious but have nowhere local (that I know of) to even look... or a group for online.
At least, a group where we could all get on at same time.
Good for you. Now go watch 'Critical Role'. It's on Twitch and YouTube. Their Dungeon Master (Matt Mercer) may be the best DM on Earth.
With your final picture, you have proved that you are one of us. Welcome.
when in doubt, there's always roll20 and discord
I just bought this set a month or two ago. I am teaching my son (10) to play.
No. That's stupid.
who tf is that, doesnt look like CR
fuuuccckkk sam riegel is so fucking good, its worth watching CR just for his ad spots..... (if you google him the top pic is from C2) xD
god damn laura bailey is so hot and such a geek i love it xD
If I decide to take it up, I have a granddaughter that will teach me. She's already corrupted my mind with anime.
ye i was thinking that, he gave him a £1 set of dice or something then he spent £30+ straight away xD
Remember advantage if you are a ranger
look up liam O'brien he dms for his kids, try to do more puzzles less just killing, give them tools instead of weapons
Will do, thanks
make sure to watch season one first as there are loads of references in season 2
Welcome aboard the game train! It doesn't stop as long as your alive and there's always new adventures out there as long as you wanna play!!
Enjoy your trip to Phandelver
Discord and table top simulator is how we play. Spanning from Newfoundland to Alberta.
I thought that dragon was going down on a knotted dick for way too long.
Didn't think this would be as big of a problem to a close group of friends as it actually was. BOY WAS I WRONG
20 years old? 20 years young I’d say! Congratulations!
This post made me extremely happy. Thanks for this man. I needed to smile today.
Already making a dice tower. You'll go far my friend. Welcome.
Chris Hardwick. He was in Return to Cindergrove
I did the same recently but with magic the gathering after being terrified. Best decision I've made in years!
I wanted to play so badly, but my experience with roll20 kind of ruined it for me. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a group irl
I'm currently running the Lost Mines of Phandelver as well, great intro campaign.
My fiance is starting her first campaign this week too. I proposed on Friday and she wanted to do something sweet for me.
One of us, One of us!
3 tips. 1. use roll20 if you're doing it online 2. as DM never show your rolls 3. You meant to do it!
*struggles under a colossal pile of dice*
They won't be, but it's a nice sentiment. One of our group set fire to his d20 after a bad session.
I've never played before where do i start. Also don't know anyone that plays.
O man, I'd love to play with someone new to the game! Have fun with it!
Yep. But then you realize that most games are at a really weird time for you like 2am or 2pm. The struggle continues :'(
Congratulation @OP, If you need any help. I'm the local call-center Dungen Master to most of my friends.
Welcome aboard! Now go to reddit and sub to /r/dnd, r/dndbehindthescreen, r/d100, r/dmacademy, and r/gametales. Such awesome subs.
We're playing with friends in Texas over Google hangouts.
I run multiple campaigns. If you have questions ask away. Also, I suggest watching critical role "arrival at Kragthammer" on youtube.
I run a Discord server dedicated to D&D with many helpful people who would happily teach you. PM me if you're interested in joining.
You just got yourself a lifelong hobby, mate.
Just stay away from 1st Edition unless you love Dark Souls or your head being put in a blender
The guy on the book cover is like " Maybe if I feed it my shield it won't eat the rest of me".
I'm 28 and have managed to get 3 friends to play. I'm getting this starter pack on payday. I'm actually really excited to start and learn!
Welcome! To the world of Dungeons and Dragons!
hah, that's just the beginning. SOON YOU SHALL BE LIKE ME! OWNING OVER TWO HUNDRED DICE BUT CURSED TO NEVER BE IN A GAME! HEED MY WARNING
ahh the candlemancer that lost his broom in the lava....poor guy
I just absolutely LOVE trinkets!
had me in tears
always nice to hear the hobby expanding to new people
good luck man. I wish i could play more D&D. its a lot of fun but my group isnt the most reliable
Is roll20 considered good for newbies? I tried one game aimed at beginners and the DM was such an asshole that it completely put me off D&D
@OP welcome! It's a great community. Let us know if you have any questions!
Stuff like yelling at players who didn't follow his script or telling me to fuck off when I complained he skipped my turn 3 times in combat
Lansing, MI here...
Hurrah! :) (Also, happy birthday!)
Welcome to the world of dickles n dwagons
I don't play and never have, but the thought of getting immersed in something and off your own bat as it were, sounds so exciting. Have fun!
Pro tip, women play also. Be nice and you might even get a date out if it. Win win
I will keep you in mind, thank you!
And now prepare to never see the sun again, Lord knows I haven't
Is it worth it? I mean I don't have any friends to play with, can it be done online?
Actaually anything with a high enough DEX bonus usually gets decent Initiative.
It's an awesome game. Have fun!
Absolutely genuinely hope you have a blast! And don't read that starter module if you plan on playing it as a player. Oh, and Pally is rad!
Roll20.net if you want to find an online group.
Welcome to the fold nerd.
That's just a bad DM and I'm sad that you had to deal with such garbage. I hope you don't give up and find a better DM. Sadly my DM isn't >
< currently looking for more players else I'd try to introduce you. :(
You literally did what I've wanted to do for about 10 years
Starting out, it's best to play in person or with people you know. Unless you can be a bigger asshole than the DM. My first game was "fun".
It's our first go at d&d. My first char and his first go at DM. So all new to this. On the flip side I also rolled a paly and his were shite
Sounds like me listening to critcal roll. I stream them on VRV at work. i just need to listen to them play.
That's not at all how you block with a shield, that is a failed saving throw. Gonna need a bigger cleric
I think I have those same dice! I have a bunch in a bowl for new players. By the way, you should pick up a player's handbook. It's useful.
Watch out for those dam Mimics.
I started playing in 1981. I've played campaigns that lasted years with the same group. Love the game and the friends it has created.
Online play is a great way to start!
Gave a set to my DM because they crit failed all the time. For him....nat 20s over and over. Not sure why they hated me.
When it's High Noon, but no one heard you
Glad to see you finally came out of the closet.
The hardest part is finding or becoming a good Dungeon Master. I wish you all the best.
I'm kinda looking for a group in Montgomery, AL. Not a dnd abundant place..
Duuuude I started playing a month ago and when people say that eldritch blast is op it really is.
Check out roll 20! It's all online, people run games from everywhere.
Don't hesitate to keep asking for help if you have any questions. Look at options, play around a little, figure out what YOU enjoy. ^^
@op if you want to learn Dnd watch critical role on geeks and sundry on twitch. There's also a YouTube channel were you can catch up
critical role is a good online campaign to watch
Man, if you can find a good DM you'll be set. Check out Roll20 for groups, but if you have friends who play you'll be hooked.
No it’s not
It's cool, just having that validation that it's not just me and that's not all DMs is nice
Sounds like you got in with a good group. Good luck. Have fun!
Apparently my local gameshop is holding a how2play D&D event this weekend so I'll give them a try. Hopefully more welcoming to beginners.
The Starter Set comes with a set of dice.
But another set of dice. Trust me, having more than one set is amazing. Especially when it comes to playing dual weirding characters
Travis is hotter; change my mind.
I'm 30 years old and I have my first session as a DM with my family group on Sunday. I'm super stoked to try out the campaign I wrote.
This. The closest group of AL players I can find is more than a hour drive away. Seems to be lots of interest locally and always new 1/2
2/2 "I want to give D&D a try" posts in the local reddit, but getting people organized is like herding cats with handful of wet noodles.
Wait, you asked her to marry you and she set up a D&D campaign for you? Why the hell didn't you wife her earlier!!?!?!?!
Find your local game store and see if they have D&D nights or Adventurer's League; or even a list of groups/DMs looking for players.
they are having a child
What's your time zone?
What does lfg mean?
Looking For Group.
Welcome to the best time of your life!
The scary doesn't REALLY start until you're the DM
Good stuff! I just started DMing and have never even really played before. It has been quite the learning curve, but we're having a blast!
37 yrs ago I was 20 and wanted to play this. Of course, small town, no internet, friends not interested and no way to find anyone to play...
best of luck to you and may you have a blast with your new family. lol
I play World of Warcraft now.
I also started earlier this year. AND I LOVE IT! Still haven't played a magic user (They are a bit complex) but I still love it!
Ouch. I would of downloaded a PDF. Wizards of the coast let's pedophiles into their company.
I want to start playing too.
see if you have a local gaming store that runs adventurer's league. Its official play by WoTC. Not quite as satisfying as a home game
but its a good place to start and learn.
That's a great way to put it, the team needs at least two people who play off of each other plus someone to be their audience, so to speak.
Welcome to the wonderful world of D&N. I used to play when I was in high school (late 80's here) and regret falling out of it. Have fun!!
That's why I have a consistent game every Sunday night. If you can make it come, if you can't that's fine. The average 5-8 people each time.
Some groups are also happy to help Orr if you're lost, those are the best our group plays roll 20, it's not the best but works across states
I don’t have dice, a kit, or know anything about the game
Neat! I'm 44 and trying to find a local group to join. They all seem to be about half my age. I've wanted to play since I was a kid.
Kudos. I've always wanted to learn, but haven't taken the step you did. Enjoy
You tube (I think) shows groups actually playing so you can see how much fun it is and get a feel for it before diving in. Have Fun!
Roll20 is kinda garbage, Fantasy Grounds is a much better program with a lot more useful features.
Welcome to the world of rolling dice! May luck be always in your favor! :)
The dice are simulated on roll20, the pathfinder rulebooks are all out there, and I'm sure someone will explain the game if you ask.
By out there I mean that you can find it all on d20pfsrd
Tons of fun! We are now playing in two different games and only started a few years ago. Got my dice tower and just painted my first token
I've used both and fantasy grounds is a more stable connection, but I like roll20 cause you can play on pretty much any computer
My current record was alternating weeks 3.75 Gestalt, Shadowrun, Cthulu, Only War. Not only different campaigns (and GMs) but different 1/
dice systems altogether. (D20, D6, D100, D10)
if i didnt have a shlong, i would agree
i am very aware of that, hence the giant love bump, and the obsession with pastries
did you see their character sheet for the kid?
I have those dice in blue!
im DMing that same starter set with my group right now! its actually really well put together and explains the basics really well
i definitely recomend you get a copy of the 5e players handbook too
That unfortunately then poses another question. What version?
Been a DM for years, across multiple campaigns. This is a perfect example of a Story DM. Only his story matters, not you or anyone else.
There are good ways of doing it and bad. I'm somewhat of a goofball dm, only there to make sure that everyone has fun. fuck the rules.
Which unfortunately means that I often have weird things happen and horribly overpowered characters. But hey, everyone has fun and thats
what really matters to me at the end of the day.
Yo fam could you recommend some places to check?
I’ve a Tiefling Bard (College of Swords), a Wood Elf Divine Soul Sorc (she was human, but died and was ressed!,) and soon to have a Wood-
- Elf Ranger. It’s a ton of fun. Enjoy your adventures!
Been playing over 15 years... and im not even 30
Aye, for 9 winter's I have toiled behind the screen. Ever seeking an end to my burden. I love it and all... But have only gotten to run
My favorite setting. Made a character to play... But the game died while I was on my way to the first session. Soshi Souma you live in
My Phone is not compatible....alternatives ?
I gotta be honest, I have none on this one.
Wow, get ready to put your imagination into overdrive! Remember, it isn't DM vs Players and the number one rule is FUN FIRST
