Sand instead of blinds
Not convenient to be flipping windows all the time tho.
|About||1 week ago|
On one hand, this will make it easier to clean the outside of windows; on the other hand, you're bringing it indoors
Do you want ants....cause that's how you get ants.
That's pretty cool, until the sand eventually scratches the shit out of the inside of the panes.
Sure - until humidity sets in...
I just want the windows I had in Germany in the US.
What kind of windows were they?
Pure awesome. Depending on where you move the handle you can do different things. On will let you crack the top so it leans back and in 1/?
Another let’s you open it normally. The blinds in Germany are great to. Think the gates in front of shops in NYC but they... 2/3
Don’t close until the very end letting in a portion of light or none at all
They are called tilt and turn windows if you want to google
Well, ant that just great. My names ants in my face Johnson.
And when someone knocks on your door and you cant look out your window to see which god you're rejecting today
Have fun cleaning that if it breaks
Yeah but I cant peak out through sand
And glass is made from sand... it's like a chicken omelette!
I'd love to pretend my house was filling with sand to onlookers! Quietly screaming as the sand rose...my outstretched hand pleading for help
Most places in my home won't work with flipping windows
Looks like fun in winter climates.
Pretty nifty until any sort of moisture gets into there and now your windows are filled with mud.
What Shecter said!
Fun idea, but impractical. What if I want just the top half covered? Blinds FTW.
Where can I buy this? I'd need some alterations though, flipping is inconvenient, just fill it with sand permanently.
Can't wait for the first time a kid throws something into it.
Had them in russia, i finally forgot how good they were, till i read your story. God i miss them
Agree with shecter. Proper windows go a long way
"Honey would you close the sand?" *violently spins the window like a foosball handle and sends the cat flying out the building*
It's ok, you just have to loudly and awkwardly flip the window then attempt to peer covertly through the falling sand. Without them noticing
Hopefully the flipping window flips and knocks him out
We have tilt and turn windows here. My local Home Depot has them.
We have rain in my country so I don't think this would be ideal
How long till the sand turns those glass panes frosted?
I guess you don’t have fucking screens.
Not in the south where humidity makes it rain where you can’t see it, but only feel it
I loved those German rollshutters. Mainly because I like to sleep in and those did an awesome job at blocking out the morning light.
How the fuck am I supposed to peek on my neighbor changing with that shit.
Slower you slut
Make circular windows that can be spun instead of flipping! We all just have to get used to circles instead of squares.
"I used to own an ant farm as a boy. Could never get the buggers to plough in a straight line." - Mustrum Ridcully.
One way to look at it. Some road dust is fine IMO. I was more thinking of the light blocking ability, but then air drafts are the negative.
Or if it's raining sideways outside a your neighbor pervy Jared is staring you and your tinder date about to Netflix and chill
I bet this looks really cool with sunlight shining on it
Ants terrified of an apocalypse every time that thing gets turned over
What happens if you just want a quick peek out of the window?
Cocaine smuggler busted
It's ok, Jared understands that my footlong isn't actually 1 ft. long
Imagine how hot that window will get in the summer sun.
It'll be cool tho because you could see all the ants building their homes :)
That's European, not German :)
That's the best part of being atheist.
Last time this was posted it cut off like half way through the first flip and bothered the shit out of me. Thank you good sir.
Glass can have a hardness rating, gorilla glass on smart phones is supposed to be resistant to keys etc
Would be pretty efficient and neat for a beach house, despite the obvious concerns.
Temper the glass and use silicone beads?
Sand will scratch gorilla glass instantly.
Flip it twice really fast
Actually, being religious is quite a lot like someone thinking they heard a doorbell, fully convinced there's someone there they cannot see
That's just the uncooked glass and some luck
Atheism is realising that due to there not being anyone, not even on the camera footage, it's a bit coocoo to think there was someone
Keys are metal. Nearly ALL glass is far, far harder than anything a key could be made of. Even cheap glass and super expensive keys.
I work as a glazier, and I've never even heard of this
I think I like this.....don't I like this?
Wait, you Don't have those in the US?
i'd smash that
TIL not everyone has windows that work like that
How am I suppose to peak through my windows to watch my neighbors with this?
You don't have those windows in the USA? I never thought about that.
Every time I go back home to BG I marvel at the fantastic EU windows we have at the house. Pull handle down, crack window -->
--> Pull handle to the side, swing entire window open. Pull handle up, window locks closed. Definitely want these at the US house too...
better yet, use blinds
Electric glass for windows is the best. Not sure now I got buy with curtains for so long!
Have them in most European houses. Had them as a kid. I just want to block out the sun.
Never been to the usa but the homes in southamerica are so outdated... Single glass... And just curtains
Shut up Jerry, that's not fancy or pretentious enough
Just tell them to take a hike and you don't wish to be part of any cult. if they don't get the hint. Smith & Wesson help.
Never been to NY, so don't understand what you mean by the blinds?
But you’re clearly French!
They were offered as a trim option at my home here in Texas. Perhaps it is builder dependant, we certainly have them though!
What about a screen to keep bugs out? Also what if you want just some sunlight but not all sunlight?
I wounder if the R value goes up or down with the sand.
Exactly my thought. Very cool idea though, maybe another much softer material like wood or plastic would work.
This is blinder than blinds.
"just close it half way" also, that'll be drafty as all hell no?
Well that sorts shit out
As a religious person, when see religious people canvassing my neighborhood, I don't answer my door either.
As an atheist, I just don't answer my door. If you're important to me, you have my number - if you're not I don't want to talk to you anyway
I relate to you so much right now.
Metals are soft. Any glass will withstand metals. Any quartz or your previous stone ring is what scratches your phone screen.
Can't help but think the gorilla glass thing is a gimmick. At least in the scratch test manner. Shatter proofing is what's needed.
And your diamond ring will scratch your windows around the handle. lol
Use sand softer than the glass, doesn't even need to be sand, problem solved.
I'm adding the windows and toilets of European persuasion to my home, any decent window / plumbing place has them, just ask.
Stainless steel will scratch glass tho
TL:DR European windows can fully open and seal better when closed, toilets rarely get clogged.
Then you will have to buy a blind.
turn and tilt, way better than the split slidy ones in US. You can buy turn and tilt in US too, any decent place that sells windows has them
Just fill it with asbestos.
Like scratches like though. The material inside needs to be what's being scratched. So a lot softer.
Or a tiny bit of moisture gets in
True. It's a super cool idea but maybe there's a reason why it's not standard today. lol Maybe styrofoam would work?
Very cool except that you need to open your window whenever you want to obscure visibility.
That's also an insulator. Might be very good for hot climates.
The design is over a century old. Turns out they were fairly good at blocking shrapnel in both world wars.
If your window has a puncture, it needs to be replaced anyway. Not sure ants could get in an unpunctured window.
That’s a mini beach right there
Windows are usually air tight. If you see it fogging up between the glass it's punctured and needs replacing.
what's stopping someone from entering your place when having one of these?
imagine having to flip the window in the winter with ice on the outside at the same time letting all the heat out.
I like that, I like that a lot
You can buy little versions similar to this as ornaments. Had one when I was a kid. 15+ years of use, it stayed crystal clear.
What if you want it to be like, a bit blinds?
“Where is the sand from, where did it go? Where is the sand now, devil window!?!”
I don't get it... What kind of house would have windows like this where you flip the window to close it
Sure, with applied force. You scratch the stainless steel more though.
I love vaccuming sand out of the carpet.
Damn, you're right random person on the internet, the people who made that impressive piece of engineering didn't think of that at All.
You uncovered their immense folly with your wry, joyless comment, proving that your nanosecond of thought beat their decades of experience
We've got a sticker by the doorbell that states if you want to sell anything or talk religion you gotta pay €25 up front. Scares most off
If the reservoir leaks, that stuff's going to be coarse, rough, and irritating, and it'll get everywhere.
And look, this pointless observation is Top Comment! That means 400 other smarmy pissants agree with you
Where would the world be without you sharp eyed heroes, climbing to the top of comment sections with pointless observations.
Ok I'm done; seriously though, what if condenstation gets in somehow and the sand packs up, very impractical.
He said he had them in Germany, not that they were exclusively German-made.
Be a mother fucker if it broke though :o
That's totally an airtight seal right there...
But let's hope there's no condensation
Too long, sorry.
Well now I want a GIANT ant farm
Oh yeah... Ah well now he knows it's a European thing :)
Does anyone notice the face on that guys' face?
You ever had to clean blinds? Fuck Blinds
True enough! I grew up in Germany and the windows are one of the many things I miss. Although, I appreciate my central air here in America.
It's going to get even hotter.
What's central air?
Sand is going to absorb all of the heat and make your house super hot.
Bitch, we might. @Equinox13
Oh the humidity... Sorry... Humanity!
Cool air pumped evenly throughout the house via a system of ducts.
Or desert sand, it's too round to use in construction but perfect for this.
Glass is made of sand so sand can not glass
On the other hand, would I trade that for a Berlin Döner Kebab? Hell yes, I would!
What is this, a blind for ants?
Except for UK, their windows open to the outside, can't lean at all.
Actually my parents place in houston came built with those. Interesting that they're not more common though
Giant ants would be a nightmare to look after though
If mosture gets into double glazing the window is ruined anyway
Exactly what I was thinking.
More seriously though, if your serious about the idea of antkeeping and large ant farms (of sorts), look up AntsCanada on Youtube.
*you're (realised I messed that up after I clicked send lol)
Yeah... No... This is stupid.
Rolladen (sp?) Yeah I miss them too. Always thought they'd be great here in US, esp. Florida during hurricanes. No more need to buy plywood.
And how am I supposed to silently spy on neighbors with this thing?
Guessing they generally need to be built when house is built as part of the construction. Retrofitting may be problematic. But that'd be /1
/2 great business if it wasn't and if people would pay, bet they're not cheap either.
Where would you even install something that needs like 4ft spinning room and isn't air/water tight?
so fucking dumb in so many ways. Sand is essentially glass, so it would be just as bright inside.
Also > "Are the zombies still out there?" " I don't know, let me check." "Steven! No!"
This window is so horribly impractical and I love it.
Wouldn’t ur house be exposed to the elements since you’re flipping the entire window? How could u possibly keep the inside @ a proper temp?
Really? Isn't that impractical? Or it since the brexit
I was always amazed how you guys can live on a house at the street level, with clear windows, where everybody can see you inside.
Ok, dead of winter. I'm supposed to flip that thing?
I have windows like that where I just moved in. Open, close and tilt. They're neat!
I'm going to patent some transition eyeglasses like that. I'll be rich!
Everyone is worrying about cleaning up potential mess, meanwhile I had to scroll this far down to see ONE person asking the real questions.
Fun fact: They are all the same God. Except Hindus basically, but they don't proselytize
dont need them in most of the USA, really only Alaska. Germany is farther north than people think, they dont realize the light in the summer
yay antfarm time.
Doesn't look like this window is very insulating
Always seeing the window half empty...
Were they... gas proof?
That man is the sandman
Now reverse it
I thought it was having an obligation free Sunday
Until you flip the window again
that's cool and all until it breaks and gets sand everywhere, or if it gets windy
I bet you didn’t imagine your rational comment turning into a religious debate!
Yes, experienced European windows this summer and was amazed. So much more practical.
So no screens on these windows then? The way it flips around seems awfully impractical.
I love that it is all or nothing
But how do you get them to lock, so robbers don't just swing your window around a jump into your house?
Thumbnail said National Geographic
Would be great when the peeping tom catches you in the shower and you have to wait 10 seconds to hide your shame
So it's sand preventing you from looking through sand.
That sounds expensive
You're letting bugs and dirt in everytime you flip it.
It would sound like a rain stick. Would not work in Wisconsin
Yeah, hold on while I flip all the windows at night.
WAAAAAIT! … This shit isn't international?
They should just mail you the Nobel Prize right now.
Yeah, you know, because hourglasses have this problem too.
No way! Didn’t you ever see honey I shrunk the kids?
I can vouch that it does a good job at keep heat and cold out as well as bubble wrap surprisingly.

You think it's funny to play god? Well, it is kinda fun....
Cuz that wouldn't be drafty during our harsh Canadian winters. Cool concept, but not good everywhere.
Not sure what’s better, the window or his reactions.
God I miss those roll shutters.
Gonna need more Windex
Kinda wanna break that window.
Then just use aluminium glass, more expensive but wouldn't get scratched.
I think we're onto something! lol
Except I think they'd create static and stick and not fall.
Throw a rock at it
This! I live in Florida, moisture gets everywhere!
You can buy them. Most builder grade houses don't install them due to higher cost. Typically you get a vinyl double hung window...
wow, how inconvenient is that?!
They are easily broken into with a shoelace though if the top is open. Slip lace in around handle, close window, pull lace down, open wide
The seal is for shit, the sand holds way more heat than blinds, it's a heavy window... there's so much wrong
We even have 4 glass thermal insulation windows with blinds inside the glass.
Great. Let me just let all the mosquitos in first ...
It’s not pretentious. It’s creative design tho
Why cant he hold on to the window
I wish you had told that to MY keys, before they scratched my Pixel2
Windows that swing all the way around so you can clean the outside from indoors have been around since the 1960s. They're called H windows.
Never half open curtains anymore.
And the flying spaghetti monster?
Sand can glass if it believes in itself
I turn a handle and the window opens, it's not what I would call impractical.
What's wrong with US toilets? I would have thought they made them extra big over there?
It will get misty on normal window, wet sand would just block the whole view completely.
A lock??? Yeah I think that's the name of the thing that stops people getting in your house...
I like opening the blinds halfway.. how to do that? Filling it with only half the sand?
Ha! This comment is underated
Do they come with ant farms?
I used to abuse pain pills with the son of an inventor who invented spherical sand designed for tennis courts.
Is silicone beads your answer to everything, shaggkx?
Well that was a strange but interesting YouTube rabbit hole to fall down at 7:30 in the morning. Thanks!
It's cut from diamond
But window treatments usually sit close to your windows. Are you supposed to uninstall them to flip them over every time?
Cool is the right word… insulation is probably shit.
Living in Belgium, the 2 things I want to bring back are the windows and the purge style roll down steel covers
It's almost as if there's a reason people just put sheets over windows instead of filling them with sand.
insulation value (if any) ?
wait but how it do
Silicone still breaks apart, becomes dusty and clings between the panes with no way to clear it. Like an old etch a-sketch
Is there some environmental reason? Like sand radiates heat better or something?
I'm down. We won't open the door if the other guy knocks, either.
Yes, but that wasn't a giant ant. They were just really tiny. It wouldn't affect the world meaningfully... only them
It seems weird, but once you get into his videos, the colonies he keeps are quite fascinating...
I wonder if it would be more effective an insulator to boot...
Silicone beads... and handcuffs
do they have screens? I couldn't tell from a video i watched
oooh can it be any colour sand? I want Black and Red Sand
Just move the building to Australia when you want privacy and you don't have to flip the windows. You're welcome.
Siphon toilets are common in North America, Europe and the rest of the west uses washdown
siphon toilets are more likely to clog when given substantial turd input
How you supposed to creepily peak through to see what those damn kids are up to across the street?
And you couldn’t have screens to let fresh air in, at least not any that I can figure out
It might be for storms, to reinforce the glass.
Okay so it might be impractical, but it looks cool
I lived in Kiel (54°N) that's about as north as Edmonton or the southern tip of Alaska.
I just learn about a world wide and shortage and now this malarkey?
I don't feel so good... -Window
Cocaine instead of sand
Except what was on the outside is now on the inside
As cool as this looks I just see so many practical issues with continued everyday use.
Not only rather heavy, but I'd bet it retains a lot of heat too.
So, how do you open the window without letting bugs in your house? A screen obviously wouldn’t work here without it getting hit.
I love comments like this, because while a valid complaint it also assumes the creator hadn’t thought of that.
Just soak the sand in glass first
Because ants have an insatiable hunger for sand. It’s what they love for. Have you ever been to the beach-ant heaven.
Better than having mud block your window haha
not good for peeking out of
It would be a terrible mess when it breaks...
That's cool and all, but does that mean there can't be any screens to keep bugs out if you want a window open?
Interesting. But I still think it'll scratch the glass like the windows of a damn beach house. lol
I love comments like this because it accuses me of making assumptions about another's thoughts, by making your own about mine.
Yeah you can add screens no problem. The European ones open to the inside, but there is a push out windows that opens to the outside
the push out is my favorite, you have to open the screen to open those or get the ones with the screw handle, like an old car window
what the fuuuuuck
push out casement is the real name, I'm renovating currently so I know all the window trivia
thanks for the info!
np, I opened this account strictly for shitposting but sometimes some useful info sneaks trough
Until somebody breaks the damn window
Can't you use electricity for the same effect?
This wouldn't work in alaska... winter wouldn't make it possible to flip the window.
Why does Kingdom Hearts 3 take so can long?
great, now its even easier to break into houses, you just have to spin the window half way
Are you Florida man?
Yeah, it's cool, the cat can't fuck it up... But where are those windows that click to cloudy/private? Like from Sum of All Fears. Want that
I am noy allowed to answer that.
Not*. Fuck I can't spell
Better yet, no windows
What? Like bars they had in those camps?
I knew you looked familiar!!
I'm still in Germany and miss the rollshutters. My current apartment has old-timey shutters. Then again, at least those just got back (1/2)
from repair so I can finally remove that bedsheet from my bedroom window...
You I like, evil :)
back to even pts now dude.
I know!!! Who down votes that classic??? Plus, it’s sand! A notoriously slow substance that has a horrible sexual reputation!
Ain't blocking any light.
have to remove my flowers
you know that logic is not welcome on Imgur
I saw this post backwards but didn't know it was backwards and couldn't figure out how the sand went up. Now it makes sense and I feel dumb.
YES! OMG a thousand times yes.
lol ok sure. So you figured that the creator thought about it but made your post anyway? Why?
That's because it is course and rough, and it gets everywhere.
there is the more obvious problem of having to open the window to put up or down the blinds.
I imagine if they had a better way to remove the sand this would be great.
Then they pulverize each other I to dust, until it's clogged.
You tell me, since you seem to know just as well as I do what my background, experience and thoughts are.
Well, at least you got the joke.
Lol that’s gonna cost a shit ton in heating bills. No way that stays insulated
Fair enough, but I do think it's cool. Fun to watch
Shucco windows, they are expensive but i did a project with them. The hardware and quality on these makes american windows look sad.
thats impractical as fuk
Indeed, Gorilla Glass 5 is actually softer than 4 and scratches a little easier but is much more resistant to shattering.
Florida woman but close enough lol. I'm a transplant so I'm not fully crazy yet.
The source (and the page of guy who actually made this window) - facebook.com/vano.chkhaidze/videos/2337026496312142/
Well, maybe the fact, that there are not much people in the place where this window is supposed to be installed - Bakhmaro valley.
No need to threaten violence, it just feeds their prejudices
I have those windows too here i Norway, they are awesome :) Btw; BG? Breat Gritain?
How does one not notice flipping a window
The forgotten country between Romania and Turkey.
